Breaking: Earlier today at 12pm East African Time, a fire broke out at Karatu Primary School in the village of Karatu in Northern Tanzania. This school supports some of our Kisa scholars. There is much still unknown about the situation including how many students are affected and the cause of the fire. At this time, we estimate that 75 to 125 students were in the school at the time of the fire, but many of the students are still unaccounted for. Unfortunately two students were killed, one of which was a Kisa scholar. More information will be given as it becomes available.
These horrific events are not to deter us from the mission of AfricAid and the Kisa Project. Part of AfricAid’s mission is to inspire young women to be strong, active leaders in their community. The experiences of today serve as another opportunity for these girls to express leadership and learn from such as a how to respond in emergency situations and confront the grief caused by the death of someone close to us. After pending investigations, the school will be repaired to continue to serve as a place to empower young women to change their lives and the lives of their communities
